HS volleyball update: Mountain Brook ends Bob Jones’ win streak, earns HeffStrong title

Mountain Brook earned 10 straight wins last week, including downing previously undefeated Bob Jones to capture the HeffStrong Tournament championship.

The Class 6A top-ranked Spartans (26-4) beat Bob Jones (34-1) – the Class 7A No. 1 Patriots were nationally ranked in two polls last week – in an exciting best-of-3 match 20-25, 25-18, 15-12 for the title.

Mountain Brook beat Athens in a regular season victory on Thursday, giving coach Mattie Gardner career win No. 100.

The Spartans won four pool play matches at Spain Park’s HeffStrong Tournament without dropping a set, beating Clay Chalkville and Shades Valley in Friday action of the two-day tournament and downing Muscle Shoals and Metairie Park (La.) on Saturday morning to earn the top seed in pool play.

Mountain Brook swept Houston (Tenn.) and Huntsville in single elimination Gold Bracket play before beating Montgomery Academy 2-1 in semifinal action after dropping the first set. The win set up the Bob Jones championship match of the tournament.

The front line of Annie Lacey, Mae Mae Beatty and Alice Garzon led the attack, combining for 149 kills for the week. Lacey had 56 kills,14 digs and 9 blocks while Beatty contributed 51 kills, 9 aces, 7 assists and 39 digs and Garzon had 42 kills, 3 aces, 7 blocks, 2 assists and 12 digs.

Hannah Parant, the Al.com A-List top senior in the state, set up the big hitters with 160 assists, adding 15 aces, 40 kills, 4 blocks, and 43 digs.

Ella Kate Wright led the defensive effort with 92 digs along with 8 aces, 3 kills and 24 assists.

Top-ranked Bob Jones (34-1) was 11-1 last week with regular season wins against Cullman, Hartselle and Muscle Shoals and beating Curry, Hillcrest Tuscaloosa, Decatur and Houston (Tenn.) to win its pool in HeffStrong Tournament action. The Patriots beat Metairie Park (La.), Spanish Fort and Bayside before losing to Mountain Brook 2-1 in the championship match.

Meg Jarrett had 142 digs with a 2.50 serve-receive rating, 9 aces and 31 assists, Riley Lovell had 165 assists, 47 digs, 11 kills and 10 aces, Kennedy Vaughn had 95 kills, 6 aces, 22 digs and 13 blocks, Eliza Tyrrell had 57 kills, 9 aces, 12 digs and 16 blocks and Rachel Mecklenburg had 31 kills, 9 aces, 72 assists and 26 digs.

Second-ranked McGill-Toolen (22-6) beat Daphne and Spanish Fort in regular season action.

Juliet Galla had 42 digs and 2 aces, Chelsea Daffin had 17 Kills and 5 digs and Paris McQuirter had 19 kills, 2 blocks and 3 digs.

Fourth-ranked Thompson (23-5) was 6-1 last week with a win over Vestavia Hills in regular season play then downing Briarwood, Guntersville, Baldwin County, Siegal (Tenn.) and Jasper before losing to Bayside in quarterfinal play at Spain Park’s HeffStrong Tournament.

Chloe Middlestat had 70 kills with a .331 hitting percentage, 12 aces, 33 digs and 7 blocks, Olivia Kelly had 151 assists, 14 aces, 23 digs and 5 blocks and Kenzly Foote had 57 digs with a 2.03 passer rating, 19 kills and 6 aces.

Third-ranked Enterprise (28-5) was 3-1 with wins over Percy Julian, JAG and Houston Academy and a loss to Florida State University High School.

Jadyn Britton had 34 kills and 22 digs, Heather Holtz had 95 assists, 23 digs and 15 blocks, Morgan Williams had 17 kills and 25 blocks and Abigail Wiggins had 23 kills, 23 digs and 8 aces.

Fifth-ranked St. Paul’s (28-8) was 8-2 last week with regular season wins over Baker and Faith Academy and HeffStrong pool play wins over White Plains and Northridge and losses to Huntsville and Spain Park. The Saints won the Silver Bracket, beating Indian Springs, Muscle Shoals, Hoover and Siegal (Tenn.) for the title.

Bennett Boulo had 9 aces, 60 Kills with a .257 hitting percentage, 126 assists and 46 digs, Blake Ferguson had 87 digs with a 2.03 serve-receive rating and 9 aces and Clarissa Dupree had 5 aces, 36 digs with a 1.93 serve-receive rating and 64 kills with a .230 hitting percentage.

Seventh-ranked Oak Mountain (18-9) beat John Carroll and Chelsea last week.

Lilian Retzke gad 98 assists, 29 Digs and 3 aces and Keara Bowen had 65 kills, 10 digs and 12 blocks.

Second-ranked Spanish Fort (35-6) was 6-2 with a win against Robertsdale and loss to McGill-Toolen in regular season play then beating

Indian Springs, Hazel Green, Homewood and Faith Christian in HeffStrong Tournament pool play before beating Spain Park and losing to Bob Jones in Gold Bracket action.

Alexis Belarmino had 158 assist, 41 digs, 17 kills and 11 aces, Taylor Ishmael had 53 kills, 10 blocks and 9 digs, Reece Varden had 50 kills, 13 blocks and 10 digs and Delaney Clough had 78 digs, 10 assist and 9 aces.

Third-ranked Bayside (31-6) was 8-1 last week with wins against Baldwin County and Gulf Shores in regular season play then beating Calera, John Carrol, Ramsay and Buckhorn to win its HeffStrong pool. The Admirals beat Arab and Thompson and lost to Bob Jones in Gold Bracket semifinal action.

Blakeley Robbins had 207 assists, 31 kills, 16 aces and 44 digs, Maysie Douglas had 62 kills and 14 aces, Hayley Robbins had 57 kills and 11 blocks, Mary Katherine Whitehurst had 90 digs, surpassing the 1,000 career dig mark in the Gulf Shores match, adding 10 aces, Misty Kate Smith had 44 kills and 14 aces and Georgia McInnis had 40 kills and 8 blocks.

Sixth-ranked Buckhorn (27-13) was 5-3 with wins over Westminster Christian and Fort Payne and a loss to Hazel Green in regular season play and beating Ramsay, John Carroll and Chelsea and losing to Bayside and Montgomery Academy in HeffStrong Tournament action.

Addi Layne had 100 assists, 11 kills, 35 digs, 5 aces and 2 blocks, Lucy Means had 102 digs, 16 assists and 5 aces and Hannah Shafer had 50 kills and 31 digs.

Seventh-ranked Pelham (14-8) beat Helena and Tuscaloosa County and lost to Northridge.

Londyn Wynn had 30 kills and 19 digs, Kylee Hester had 79 assists, 29 digs, 4 aces and 9 kills and Camryn McMinn had 28 kills, 7 aces and 12 digs.

No. 10 Pike Road (26-5) won four matches, beating LAMP, Park Crossing, Auburn and Dothan.

Muscle Shoals (22-7) was 5-5 with wins against Danville and Brewer and losses to Hartselle and Bob Jones in regular season play, then beating Shades Valley, Clay-Chalkville and Curry and losing to Metairie Park (La.), Mountain Brook and St. Paul’s in HeffStrong Tournament action.

Audrey Johnson had 38 kills, Addison Armstrong had 43 kills, 57 digs and 11 aces and Chloe Wyatt had 79 assists, 32 digs and 15 aces.

Saint James lost to Montgomery Catholic 18-25, 25-22, 25-20, 18-25, 15-13 as Kaylin Corley had 4 aces, 23 kills and 30 digs, Ava Card had 29 kills, 2 blocks, 2 assists and 28 digs and Tatiana Shuford had 2 blocks, 48 assists and 20 digs.

Top-ranked Arab (28-7) was 9-2 last week with regular season wins against Jasper twice, Plainview, Fairview and Hayden and wins over Sparkman, Hoover and McAdory and a loss to Montgomery Academy in HeffStrong Tournament pool play. The Knights fell to Bayside 2-1 in Gold Bracket action.

Laney Kelley had 86 kills, 9 aces, 12 blocks, 4 assists and 20 digs, Millie Lackey had 24 kills, 2 aces, 5 blocks, 216 assists and 65 digs, Sami Kate Hudson had 50 kills, 10 aces, 2 blocks, 7 assists and 50 digs, Bennett Elrod had 46 kills, 7 aces, 3 blocks, 10 assists and 55 digs and Marissa Pope had 2 aces, 18 assists and 108 digs.

Second-ranked Alexandria (35-4) won the Brooks Invitational, downing Loretto (Tenn.), Brooks, Deshler, Athens Bible, Russellville, Waterloo and Lauderdale County for the title.

Eryn Spradley had 60 kills and 14 blocks, Kailey Dickerson had 51 kills, 38 digs and 14 aces, Devan White had 48 digs and 11 aces and Ava Johnson had 34 digs and 8 aces.

Third-ranked Montgomery Academy (30-5) was 8-1 last week with wins over Brewbaker Tech and Montgomery Catholic in regular season play then beating McAdory, Arab, Hoover and Sparkman to earn the top seed in its HeffStrong Tournament pool. The Eagles beat Buckhorn and Briarwood before losing to champion Mountain Brook in semifinal play.

Addi Vinson had 191 assists for the week, breaking the 3,000 career assists mark in the match against McAdory — she currently has 3,115assists — adding 71 digs, 9 kills, 10 aces and 7 blocks. Elle McBride had 87 kills, 55 digs, 11 aces and 6 blocks, Caroline McDaniel had 54 kills, 63 digs, 16 aces and 6 blocks and Emmy Sorrell had 116 digs and 7 aces.

Eighth-ranked Madison Academy (23-13) was 6-1 with wins against East Limestone, Athens Bible and Whitesburg Christian along with wins over Danville, Hatton and Wilson and a loss to Lauderdale County in the Brooks Invitational.

Isabelle Sutton had 63 kills with a .292 hitting percentage, 5 aces and 36 digs, Sydney Privett had 36 kills with a .333 hitting percentage, 13 aces and 3 blocks and Gabby Ghee had 28 kills with a .207 hitting percentage and 2 blocks.

Ninth-ranked Lawrence County (19-13) beat West Point, Cold Springs, Brewer and Lauderdale County in regular season play.

Top-ranked Montgomery Catholic (20-7) beat St. James and Alabama Christian and lost to Montgomery Academy.

Zaria Rudolph had 31 kills, 13 blocks and 26 digs, Mally Barranco had 90 digs, Maria Schwarz had 143 assists and Harper Howell had 38 kills and 16 blocks.

Second-ranked Trinity (16-8) was 4-2 at Spain Park’s HeffStrong Tournament, beating Fort Payne, Sylacauga and Jasper and falling to Orange Beach in poll play. The Wildcats beat Guntersville in Silver Bracket play then lost to Hoover.

Isabel Hill had 105 digs and 7 aces in the tournament and passed a 2.04 in serve-receive while Anna Moore had 58 kills with a .339 hitting percentage.

Third-ranked Good Hope (27-5) was 2-2 with wins over East Lawrence and Austin — coach Natasha Holder picked up career win No. 200 — and losses to Lauderdale County and Hartselle.

Sixth-ranked Central-Florence (30-7) was 8-1 with regular season wins against West Limestone, Lindsay Lane, Wilson and Deshler 3-2 and win over Lindsay Lane, Hernando (Miss.), Covenant Christian and Danville and a loss to Loretto (Tenn.) in the Brooks Invitational.

Chloe May had 239 assists, 23 aces and 94 digs, Callie Beth Wright had 87 kills and Natalie Nix had 99 digs.

Brooks High (16-14) was 5-2 last week with regular season wins over West Morgan and Rogers — coach April Marsh earned career win No. 700 with the victory — and a loss to Deshler and beating Athens Bible, New Albany, West Morgan and Clements and losing to Alexandria in the Brooks Invitational.

Scarlett Albert had 56 kills, 6 blocks and 9 digs, Maggie Jae Marsh had 40 Kills, 3 Block, 44 Digs, 9 Aces and 91 Assists, Bentlee Butler had 33 Kills, 4 Blocks, 51 Digs and 12 Aces and Brayleigh Leone had 67 Digs and 7 Aces.

New Hope (15-13) was 3-3 with wins over Geraldine, Weaver and Hayden and losses to DAR, Madison County and Sand Rock.

Malaina Cloud had 113 assists, 38 kills and 55 digs and Rylee Jo Harbin had 94 digs.

Priceville was 3-2 at Austin’s Tournament beating Pisgah, Lee-Huntsville and Phil Campbell and losing to Austin and Cullman.

Top-ranked Plainview Class (25-4) was 2-2 with wins over Jasper and Geraldine and losses to Arab and Ft. Payne.

Ali Price had 126 assists and 46 digs, surpassing 1,000 career digs, Faith Odom had 41 kills and 26 digs, Chloe Hatch had 33 kills, 10 blocks and 31 digs and Kami Sanders had 29 kills, surpassing 1,000 career kills, 6 aces and 18 digs,

Second-ranked Mobile Christian (21-3) beat Bayshore Christian as Ella Manning had 11 Kills with a .556 hitting percentage and 4 Aces and Melaina Haines had 15 Kills and 9 Aces.

Third-ranked Lauderdale County (35-10) was 8-4 with wins over East Lawrence, Good Hope and Clements and losing to Lawrence County and Brewer in regular season play then beating West Limestone, Ashville, Madison Academy, James Clemons and Deshler and losing to Addison and Alexandria to finish runnerup in Brooks Invitational.

Sophomore Libero Adeline Dickerson surpassed 1,000 career digs Saturday and has 1,024 while Molly Burchell had 51 kills, 14 blocks, 39 digs and 7 aces and Laura Clemmons had 36 kills and 9 blocks.

Fourth-ranked St. Luke’s (15-11) beat Faith Academy, W.S Neal and Flomaton.

Cammie Waite had 50 Digs and 3 Aces, Audrey Smith had 49 kills, 5 blocks and 3 aces and Baker Garside had 59 Assists.

Fifth-ranked Prattville Christian (18-9) beat Dadeville twice and Beulah.

Baylee Rogers had 15 aces, 7 digs and 43 assists, Brylee Byrd had 17 aces and 7 digs and Emma Cate Carter had 21 kills, 8 aces and 9 digs.

Sixth-ranked Houston Academy (12-9) was 1-3 with a win over Northside Methodist and losses to Ashford, Enterprise and Seminole (Fla.).

Mary Suzan Aman had 45 Kills, 8 Blocks and 4 Aces and Molly Rutland had 111 Assists, 8 Aces and 20 Digs.

Ninth-ranked Geraldine (16-11) was 4-4 with a regular season wins against Valley Head and losses to DAR and Plainview and wins over Athens Bible, Glencoe and Weaver and losses to New Hope and Spring Garden in tournament play.

Brooklyn Hall had 17 aces, 102 kills, 14 blocks, 5 assists and 27digs, Kentlei Rogers had 9 aces, 66 kills, 6 blocks and 23 digs, Jaycee Berrong had 3 aces, 4 kills, 2 blocks, 255 assists and 18 digs and Hallie Burns had 5 aces and 105 digs.

Top-ranked Donoho (18-7) beat Ranburne and Woodland in regular season play.

Estella Connell had 20 kills, 4 aces and 5 blocks and Samantha Wakefield had 18 kills and 12 digs.

Seventh-ranked Sand Rock (23-12) was 7-3 last week with wins over Cherokee County, Collinsville and West End and a loss to Southside-Gadsden in regular season play then beat Walter Wellborn, Woodville, East Limestone and New Hope and lost to Athens and Spring Garden at The Battle for Supreme Courts tournament.

Katelyn St.Clair had 119 kills – she surpassed 1,500 career kills during tournament and is currently second all-time at the school – adding 71 digs, 5 blocks and 15 aces. Rylin St.Clair had 212 assists, 53 digs, 4 blocks and 13 aces and Chloe Stephens had 132 digs and 10 aces.

Cornerstone Schools (15-2) beat Vincent and Shelby County last week.

Kemberly Roscoe had 10 kills and 4 blocks against Vincent while Keriyana Prince had 17 assists and 2 blocks.

Roscoe had 11 kills against Shelby County while Prince had 14 assists, 4 blocks, 2 kills and 2 aces, Milia Skanes had 8 kills 10 digs and Lauren Dunning had 10 assists, 5 aces and 5 digs.

Top-ranked Addison (23-6) was 7-2 with wins against Winston County, Meek and Lynn and a loss to Lamar County in regular season play then beating Asheville, West Limestone, Lauderdale County and Corner and losing to Deshler in the Brooks Invitational.

Hadley Butler had 17 kills, 58 digs, 14 aces, 7 blocks and 111 assists, Dacey Baker had 66 kills, 59 digs, 9 aces and 2 blocks, Katie Barrett had 60 kills, 18 digs, 12 aces and 6 blocks and Bailee Ory had 101 digs and 7 aces.

Second-ranked Spring Garden (29-3) won 10 matches last week, including capturing the Supreme Courts Tournament title in Guntersville. The Panthers beat Cedar Bluff, Faith Christian, Cherokee County and Jacksonville in regular season play then beat East Limestone, Scottsboro, St. John Paul ll, Hayden, Geraldine and Sand Rock.

Ace Austin led the Panthers with 98 kills for the week.

Fifth-ranked University Charter (18-3) beat Keith, R.C. Hatch and Thomasville.

Ella Grace Larkin had 40 Kills and 8 digs, Brinkli Wood had 17 aces, 19 kills and 13 digs and Lola Dixon had 47 assists, 13 digs, 8 kills and 13 aces.

Sixth-ranked Macon East (11-6) beat Lakeside, Chambers Academy and Fort Dale.

Sara Cochran had 3 aces, 20 kills, 2 blocks and 6 digs against Fort Dale while Mollie Ross had 3 aces, 9 kills and 23 digs and Pressley Graham had 2 aces, 7 kills and 11 digs.
